GOOD THINGS ARE IN STORE!

As part of a comprehensive initiative to make New York City Public Markets world-class destinations for both local residents and tourists, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) unveiled a dynamic new website, advertising campaign, and other special initiatives aimed at unifying the network of historic markets under one citywide brand. The network today includes Essex Market in the Lower East Side, La Marqueta in Harlem, Moore Street Market, 13th Avenue Retaiill Market in Brooklyn, Arthur Avenue Market in The Bronx, and Jamaica Market in Queens. The markets are currently home to more than 90 merchants offering everything from canelés and cannolis to garden supplies and haircuts.

LA PLACITA:
10/31/2019 GRAND OPENING

NYCEDC celebrated the reopeniing of beloved community plaza and outdoor space La Placita at La Marqueta in East Harlem. Immediately following the ribbon-cutting for the plaza, Councilmember Diana Ayala and NYCEDC hosted a Halloween party for local children and their families which featured games, pumpkin decorating, music, food from La Marqueta vendors, and more. The project was made possible with support from former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito—who provided $5M iin Ciity fundiing for the renovatiion—and Councilmember Diana Ayala. Aaris Design served as the lead architect for the project and Hunter Roberts was the lead contractor assigned to the redesign.

The new plaza amenities will include:

  • Community engagement space
  • Concession space
  • Exhibition space
  • Insulation from the street
